Project Spaceship Frequently Asked Questions
What is Project Spaceship?
Excellent question, Greg. I can't stand idly by and let my children play in old-fashioned, boring playhouses of yore. So instead I'd like to build a playhouse that is actually a spaceship! There will be a flight deck (for the pilot) and a main deck (for science and stuff). It will have LED lights, functioning screens, speakers, and all manner of gizmos powered by Raspberry Pi or Arduino or something similar. Better yet, I'd like to also construct a "mission control" desk in the house that can communicate directly with the space ship in the back yard!
Will it fly?
Only in my kids' imagination. Through open source and custom software, I can make the simulation as realistic or fantastic as I like. The goal here is to promote fun and educational play. I'd rather have my kids imagine themselves exploring uncharted planets than have them stuck in the 1950's rut of simply "playing house." So no, Greg, it won't fly. But it will set their imaginations soaring!
How will you build it?
Little by little. At its most basic, it will be little more than a giant wooden box in my backyard. But then I can add some wiring, some paint, some screens, some microcomputers, some paint, some fans, some lights... etc etc. I have a few years until my daughter will be able to play with it anyway, so it will be a long project. Have faith in me, Greg. It'll get done.
Can I help?
Very thoughtful of you, Greg! Yes. If you live nearby, you can help with manual labor and other construction. Admittedly, my hardware skills are deplorable. But I can engineer and plan and architect! If you don't live nearby, then financial contributions will do just fine. Or, you know, lend some support in the form of encouraging words or handmade spacesuits.
